I do layers...the Israelis developed a cheap lightweight armor that was layers of steel and plywood. Hard layer spreads the force, soft layer dissipates it.
Boxing the speaker, and surrounding an inner box with layers of foam. Outer layer spreads the impact, foam layer dissipates. the heavier the item, the more layers needed, as it will hit the floor with more force when dropped.

I recently shipped the Model 14 12" woofers out to GPA. I put them both in the same box. Here's how:
Bolt each woofer to a square sheet of plywood, sized for the box.
Screw several 2x2 vertical supports between the two sheets, leaving enough space between them for a layer of styrofoam sheet.
Put a third sheet of plywood on top, again using more 2x2 spacers.
Some styrofoam sheets on top and it's all set. This survived the UPS gorillas out there and back.

Peanuts and Altec goop...bad combo!! Up there with vodka and sleeping pills.
The styro peanut will melt, becoming one with the goop.
But it does get worse. I got some speakers from ebay one time where the shipper used actual POPCORN! Maybe it was movie theater surplus or left over from some carnival. Had that rancid fake butter smell. NASTY!!
Bowtie speaks the truth. Incidentally, this guys knows how to pack a speaker!
